Lucio Dambretti’s new apprentice met him at his car the next morning when he pulled into the small parking lot in front of the main building of the Villa.

Lavon de Bleu came hurrying out to meet his new Master with a great smile on his face, but it faded quickly at the sight of the woman in the seat next to him. The Master had brought his mother here?! It couldn’t be! It was not allowed! The only woman outside of Sister Meredith ever to have been allowed within the Villa had been Michele Sinclair-Ramsay. Lucio Dambretti had never even asked to bring this woman here. Lavon knew this quite well. He’d heard his mother complain about it often enough. But she had told him that Lucio was stubborn and secretive about his work and told her nothing of what he did for the Order of the Red Cross of Gold. In fact, he had waited over six months after they were married to even tell her that he was ‘special’. And then he had admitted very little to her, expecting her to be happy with him and his credit cards and no explanations. This had irritated Jasmine greatly, but he had been essentially correct for the first five years. But things had been going down hill between them during the past two years and she was always threatening to leave him. Lavon back-pedaled from the Volvo and tried to make his escape, but Simon d’Ornan’s Audi pulled up directly between him and the door of the building.

“Ho there, Lavon!” Simon greeted him immediately upon getting out of his car. “We are not late, are we?”

“No, Master,” Lavon told him, trying to remain neutral in spite of his need to get away.

“We have a bit of a problem here,” Simon nodded toward the Volvo. “Brother Dambretti’s wife is ill.”

“Oh,” Lavon glanced over his shoulder nervously.

“Please go and find the Ritter or, if possible, the Master and tell him that it is urgent that we speak to one or both of them immediately… here, in the parking lot.” Simon put one arm around his shoulders and then shoved him toward the doors of the building.

Lavon searched desperately for the Grand Master, but he was in his quarters now and Lavon would not go there. The Ritter was not in his office. The boy ran down the covered walkway in front of the Knight’s quarters and then bounced off his father’s chest as he stepped out of Simon’s room, directly into his path.

“Whoa!” John Paul caught him and set him back on his feet and then looked at him quizzically.

“Father,” Lavon said breathlessly and looked about before lowering his voice. “Master Dambretti is outside with Master d’Ornan and they have… Jasmine with them. They have sent me to look for the Grand Master. They say she is ill.”

John Paul looked up and blinked slowly. Jasmine! Here! And ill? What was the meaning of this?

He hurried away with Lavon on his heels. Simon’s request for the Ritter all but forgotten.
